I am new to the trucking industry. It seems crazy that drivers are paid per mile driven rather than paid a salary or by the hour. Obviously drivers will want to maximize their earnings. The only way a driver can do this is by driving more miles. Drivers used to drive without much accountability for their time and so employers of truck drivers are exempt from minimum wage requirements or for overtime or for how long a driver works. CPM is a poor pay structure if safety is the goal.
